ELFIN MR8 1976
ELFIN MR8C Chassis no 8761 was built in 1976 and was succesfully driven by Garrie Cooper, the founder of ELFIN RACE-CARS. In 1979 Larry Perkins took over the driving duties, and promptly won the 1979 ROTHMANS INTERNATIONAL F5000 series. Perkins again won races the following year, however perhaps the highlight in 1980 was when extremely compitent French F1 driver drove the car to 3rd place in the 1980 Australian Grand prix. His podium finish was only beaten by Allan Jones 1st in a then current FWO7 Williams F1 followed by Bruno Giacomelli in a current spec Alfa romeo F1 car. Pironi lapped all other F5000's in what was an amazing drive.
The car was sold to Peter Middleton and then from 1985 to 1998 it went to Peter Brennan. In 1998 Graham Mein purchased the car and owned it until mid 2008.
I have been the proud owner since then.
My best finish was 4th at the 2009 Australian Grand prix at Albert Park. Due to a minor mechanical issue on the 1st lap of qualifying, I unfortunately had to start last on a 34 car F5000 grid. We went from 34th to 12th in the 1st race then from 12th to 4th in the final race having the 3rd fastest lap time. I expect the car to be now even more competative after its comprehesive restoration.
ENGINE & GEARBOX
The car has a brand new 1 race old engine, not reconditioned, brand new block, crank, rods and pistons, brand new Alloy heads etc etc. The only thing that came off the old engine was the Injection manifold, sump, starter motor and original Milodon rocker covers.
The DG300 was pulled apart, inspected and rebuilt with new gears and dog rings.
CHASSIS & SUSPENSION
The Tub and all front suspension are all brand new as a result of a frontal accident at the "Lady Wigram" F5000 trophy race. This work was performed by well respected racecar engineer Peter Beehag of Ontrack engineering. Those who have seen the car are full of praise for Peter Beehags excellent high quality work. In the rear several suspension components are new including brand new Elfin rear uprights.
The car comes with 17 Wheels, a BRAND NEW (never used) set of wets, 2 front noses, front wings (including moulds) the original long engine used by Garrie Cooper. 3 tubs full of various suspension components, Gear ratios, a pair of brand new PWR custom made Alloy radiators along with miscelaneous bits and pieces to numerous to mention.
The car has a CAMS issued COD (Authenticated "CERTIFICATE OF DESCRIPTION") It comes with 3 historical CAMS log books starting from 13/2/1976 to present which shows all race meetings including scrutineers remarks.
Garrie Coopers HAND WRITTEN 179 PAGE JOURNAL which features hand written comments and maintenance schedules and general discussion about all the events that Garrie competed at with this car. there are several grid sheets, race result sheets, Team Elfin letter heads, posters, magazines, gear ratio charts, kinsler injection manifold information, original invoices, lobying letters to CAMS. original and current set-up sheets, 1976 sponsorship details plus a lot more.
This has been an extreemly hard decision for me to put this famous car on the open international market. I absolutely love driving and owning this car. My reasons are genuine for the reluctant sale and i will only discuss this in person.
Option 1 (my prefered one)
Someone along the lines of a Motorsport Enthusiast (or Patron if you like )who wants to own a classic historic race-car but does not want to drive it. I would be more than happy to negotiate a price and arrangement whereby I still have an association with the car and still drive it at the historic F5000 race meetings on a shared agreeable financial basis etc etc .
Option 2 I would consider a trade arrangement of another historic race or road car at an agreed price
Option 3 A Straight sale where if it was agreeable i could attend selected race meetings purely to be involved and assist the new owner.
